See the details below.

DETAILS COMMITMENT

Captains and crews who wish to participate in the Great Cardboard Boat Race (GCBR) make a commitment to:

• Construct a boat out of cardboard and duct tape prior to race day.

• All boats are human powered, minimum 2 people (oars and paddles acceptable as propulsion tools — you provide)

• Participate in the entire event which includes: picking up (at registration) or finding your own cardboard

• Attend the race on Saturday, check in by 11:30 with your completed boat.

• Dispose of or remove boat from property after the race.

• All boats must submit their final name of boat and crew the day before the race. Boats will be lined up on the beach, for all spectators to see prior to the race. Judges also pick their favorite boat. Teams are encouraged to come early if they wish to set up on the beach.

• If there are enough boats, races will be organized by age.

• Permission and waiver must be signed by parent or guardian for each crew member before the start of the race.

• Life jackets must be worn by all crew (bring your own).

AWARDS

Prizes will be awarded for the top three boats that make it through without sinking. A cardboard boat must complete length of the course to qualify as a “finisher.” Swimming crew members pushing a boat (or some portion of it) through the course is not considered “racing.” The boat (or some portion of it) must be maneuvered and propelled by at least one paddling crew member.  This race is a one or two lap race. Race prizes guaranteed to all registered participants including crew members and boat builders are handed out during the awards ceremony and each crew is recognized. Special trophies will be awarded for the following:

Best in Race Award (first place) - First boat to cross the finish line in the final heat.

Second and third place prizes will also be awarded for the final heat.

Judge’s Choice Award - Awarded by the judges based on creativity, showmanship and team spirit. Costumes and props are encouraged!

The Wonder That Went Down Under Award (Most Spectacular Sinking) - Awarded to the crew who, in the opinion of the CLIA, was the most spectacular in the way the ship and its crew went down. (As long as the boat or some part of it is propelled by at least one paddling crew member, the boat may continue to the finish line.) Awards ceremony will be after the final heat, after the race and all boats are out of the water and the area is cleaned up.
